The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has approved the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in the UK, with Pfizer in the process of bringing the drug to market for erectile dysfunction (ED).
The decision follows a review by the EMA’s UK arm, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which also concluded the approval of Viagra for the treatment of ED.
Pfizer’s Viagra has been available for three years in the UK since its launch in 1998.
The MHRA concluded in December 2017 that the drug could not be marketed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The approval came as the EMA was reviewing the UK drug’s manufacturing process and regulatory environment.
The EMA’s review found that although the drug was approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in the UK in the period between its launch and December 2017, Viagra’s approval remained in effect until May 2018, with the drug only remaining on the market until November 2019.
According to the MHRA, Viagra can be safely prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction if it is taken in the morning with a glass of water. The drug can also be taken on an empty stomach.
But it is not clear if the drug can be safely prescribed for patients with cardiovascular conditions, and has not been shown to cause a risk of stroke or heart attack.
The EMA has advised patients that Viagra may be used off label for the treatment of these conditions.
A spokesperson for Pfizer, which manufactures Viagra, said: “We are committed to making available Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and are working with regulatory bodies and healthcare professionals to ensure this drug remains available for future use in the UK.
“”
In a statement, Pfizer said: “Pfizer’s decision to market Viagra for treatment of erectile dysfunction is a clear demonstration of commitment to quality and safety.”
